RAINY DAY :: Production Notes

Much of this short was improvised on site--thus, the storyboard notebook wasn't used all that much. The improvisation, however, resulted the inclusion in some of my favorite elements. I tried to avoid it, but some spoilers may be present, so watch out below!

The Clockwork Orange references, most notably, weren't in the original script. When the shot that we had hoped would transition to the basement didn't seem to be working, we decided to try a different approach, and I thought of the long zoom out shot, as used to such great effect in the opening of Kubrick's Clockwork Orange. While planning this shot, I also realized the potential of using a Clockwork-esque voiceover.

The laughing near the end was also not in the original script. While shooting the shot in question, Connor was overcome with laughter--and his laughter was just so delightful that we couldn't leave it out. Max and I started laughing as well, and we can actually be heard in the final cut. I left the extra voices in on purpose, to add to the insanity of the moment.

The music, unlike for our other shorts that use music, was not chosen in advance. I knew I wanted solo piano music, but had no idea which pieces to use. As CML had already recorded a number of pieces for his college application, and I wanted to avoid the rare joys of distribution rights and royalties should I decide to submit this short to some festivals (which I would like to), I just had him send me a folder of pieces and I chose from those.

The drill, as well, was an on site inspiration. Truly, a stroke of genius.
